About Us

Our expertise

We are a consulting engineering company run by chartered mechanical engineers and chartered acousticians (registered with the Engineering Council)

We design and improve products, equipment and environments to meet design specifications, industrial standards and regulations. Our engineering services are mainly in the following areas:

  • we provide engineering services to improve machinery, products and equipment to be more environmentally friendly and compliant.
  • improve equipment, and machinery to operate reliably and resiliently in their immediate surroundings
  • we improve working and living environments for people
  • protect the natural environment by addressing the former points, and through production and quality processes, to safeguard nature.

The above are areas of core business for us. Our work is diverse at times; however, all our work comprises of the above in some form.

Mission Statement

We help your business benefit financially by making your company, its products, its processes and services compatible and resilient to its environment.

Our Approach

Environmentally Sound is engineering for the environment. Our approach is to create synergy between man, machine and the environment, i.e. we address the wellbeing of people and the environment and we make machinery and equipment more environmentally friendly.

When you are looking for someone to help you succeed, you don’t visit a website to read pages of self-congratulatory marketing prose.

You've likely landed on our website because you are seeking answers to two fundamental questions:

  1. Can Environmentally Sound Limited help me solve my problem(s)?
  2. Is Environmentally Sound working with businesses or individuals similar to us?

While the precise answers to these questions will depend on who you are and what you do, we can tell you that we serve different markets and different types of businesses.

We serve many. That said, our customers have several things in common. They are all trying to improve their products and their financial performance.

From here onwards on this page we provide brief coverage of the contracts that we've fulfilled. For some, a brief overview is provided so that you can see how and what we've completed successfully.

We use both our engineering and management skills and expertise to help you with the following:

  1. We've helped...
  2. Processes and Procedures
  3. Design Requirements
  4. Product Design and Product Improvement
  5. Analysis
  6. Investigative Engineering
  7. Field Measurements and Surveys
  8. Product Testing
  9. Quality (Process) Improvement
  10. Warranty Improvement

We have helped...

... companies in several different industries, including the automotive, aerospace, industrial and the construction industry with improving their products and processes, and site environments.

When improving the products, we experimentally evaluated the products to determine their performance by taking measurements and surveys, and then improve them by design, through modelling, analysis and testing.

We have improved operational processes for automotive and aerospace companies, all focused on reducing the time and resources required, making them more efficient, and consequently more energy efficient, and freeing revenue to re-invest in their company.

Procedures and Processes

One of the main objectives of processes and procedures is to perform a task repetitively, no matter who does the task.

Throughout all the contracts that we've fulfilled, we strived to perfect the procedures and processes so that we eliminate waste and reach the desired and intended outcomes.

  • Effective Procedures - clear and concise outcomes
  • Efficient Processes - to eliminate waste and reduce cost of manufacturing. (this is highlighted in the quality)

Design Requirements

Drafting the design requirements is a laborious, but a very important task. The thoroughness thereof determines the quality of the end product, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the product evolution from conception through to decommissioning.

We have helped customers with their design requirements to ensure that when the compliancy or certification testing is conducted, the product shall pass the tests satisfactorily.

There are functional and environmental requirements. The environmental requirements detail the environment in which the product must operate reliably. This is where we can help you.

These design requirements were aligned to industrial, legislatory and regulatory standards.

Product Design and Improvement

We design and improve products to be robust, reliable and compatible in whatever environment they operate. Whether the environment is extreme, with severe environmental or climatic elements, or in natural or quiet environments in which the product must operate unnoticed and blend in with the surroundings.

The environmental elements for which we design include vibration, noise, temperature, altitude, pressure, humidity, salinity, sand and dust etc. Much of which are covered in sections of the aviation tests standards like Mil-Std-810 and RTCA/DO-160.

During the design phase, we keep focus on other areas of the product lifecycle like analysis, development, testing (environmental testing), production and quality, so that we can ensure an efficient and effective process to achieve the end product financially efficiently.

Product Design Analysis

Our analysis work is mainly fuelled by products not performing as intended, failing in the field, or failing during compliancy testing.

Our analysis work starts with surveys and measurements on the product when operating in the environment in which it is non-compliant. Our observations are investigated and compared to the analysis model of that product, to confirm that the dynamic, structural and/or temperature behaviour coincides with the actual product.

If discrepancies are found between the model behaviour and the actual measurements, we update the model, and improve the design through design corrections and modelling simulation.

Investigative engineering

Much of our work involves investigating why product is not performing in its environment as it was intended, and hence we are often requested to find solutions to improve that product.

This is where we investigate the failures or non-compliances to ascertain why the product has failed, and to find a design solution for it.

The investigative engineering work occurs at different phases of a product lifecycle; a product could under perform or fail during any development or compliancy or certification testing.

We gather the following information to ascertian where the inadequacy occured:

  • the type of failure, if a failure occurred
  • the design itself
  • the environment in which the product will operate
  • how the finished article matches the original design drawings
  • the manufacturing process and process quality
  • the quality of the end product
  • the quality process, and so forth

Field measurements and surveys

Several industries require some form of investigation through measurements and surveys.

We perform measurements and surveys to ascertain whether products and environments adhere to current design standards, regulations, industrial standards and legislation.

To improve a product, or to investigate a non-conformity, we instrument structures to record their structural behaviour - vibration, structural dynamics, strain and temperature.

For planning permission, involving noise and vibration, we perform surveys and measurements, compile reports and submit them on behalf of the customer to the body responsible. Within the mitigation section of the report, we recommend the most cost efficient mitigation actions, keeping your expenditure down.

Product testing

Product testing is where Environmentally Sound Limited derived its name; from environmentally robust.

Going on over 30 years of experience in this field, we have conducted fatigue testing, vibration, shock, temperature testing etc. All to certify products and machinery to comply with their designated environments. To operate resiliently and reliably.

However, this is also the industry that created our expansion, as during most testing, products would fail, and as we were working on the projects already, we investigated the failure, gathered the evidence and performed the analysis, and then found the most cost effective and efficient solution.

Quality (Process) Improvement

Our involvement in product quality improvement has been ongoing for many years, as that is the main reason why we do engineering, to improve customers' products.

However, we have been involve in improving quality processes, by using large amounts of metrology data - to save companies money. The company programme manager knew that it could be done; and we helped him achieve it.

By eliminating waste, we developed an instrument that could predict whether a component will fit on the final assembly and comply with the quality standard. This, all before the components were despatched from the suppliers' factories.

By using this instrument or methodology, all products passed the final assembly quality inspection. Consequently, we were able to avoid another unnecessary expenditure, which ran into millions of Pounds during the assembly of a similar product line a year before.

"We saved £18.6M for a luxury car company; what can we do for you?"

Warranty improvements

Unfortunately, there are products that make it onto the market after passing their conformity testing.

As the nature of our work is to find solutions for problems, we get involved in investigating warranty failure - products that fail during their warranty term.

Working closely with our customers, were collate all the information and data on the particular component or machine, and analyse it to find an engineering solution.

Collateral Benefit

Making your company environmentally friendly is a complemental service, a collateral gain or benefit that we provide you through our engineering and management expertise.

We try our best to solve problems by finding the most cost effective and process efficient way possible. That way you gain financially by eliminating waste and increase productivity and, consequently, your company becomes an environmentally friendly company.

Therefore, being environmentally friendly is the true end product:-

"Costing you improvements throughout; that benefit your company throughout!"
