The design of the product or machine is the first area where one should save revenue. Linked to processes and procedures, it is your company's responsibility to improve them.
Your company should develop over time, so that designs cost you less money to realise the product. There are several areas that can be addressed in engineering and designing of new products.
Be sure that the product requirements for the product is in detail and complete.
Having a thorough exercise in drawing up to requirements will save you in the long—run. As incomplete requirements will deliver products that are not fit for the purpose. As there is a risk of redesigning.
The design of the product can start with concise requirements. During which new concepts will evolved. These new concepts are risks in your programme. As you or the designer will not have any proof whether it will work or not.
You should have warranty data, if your company designs and manufactures products. Warranty data, i.e. product failures, failure costs, and so on. Thus, your company's attention is always drawn to the failing parts. So one does not notice the parts and components and products that do not cause you problems and loss of revenue. But you do have good performers.
Now, you know which designs and products do not cost you money. Thus, concepts from these ‘good designs' should be used in your new products. All because over the years in the field, they have proven to be reliable and low cost. So, avoid new unproven concepts wherever you can.
If you cannot, and you must use a new concept, be sure to design an experiment to test the new concept. That aligns with the FMEA and the DVP. If one cannot draw up an experiment or test that you cannot perform, change the design.
Over the last 35 years, we have found that companies design products without looking forward. Design new concepts without addressing how they are going to test them. And what equipment they would need when tested.
For example, to confirm that a concept works, you want an error of 10% greatest. Yet, the testing facility that you have available, is not that accurate. Hence, you now have designed something with high risk, as you are unable to verify it. Which could cost you the project.
So, through engineering and processes, you can avoid risk and option that could cost you revenue. But, you can use past designs and systems that have proven reliability. And will not cost you revenue. But save!
When the surveyors monitored the excavation of the channel tunnel, they monitored their progress. By referencing points on land. So they tunnelled in the set direction by aligning points behind them. They knew from where they came, thus knowing where they are going.
Your company can do the same. Look what products and concepts were/are reliable. That generated revenue, those that didn’t. Select the winner. And re-use those concepts.
