Case Study: Plant Noise Assessment
Introduction
A forging company in Lincoln required a plant noise assessment of their forging operations for planning consent, to operate through the night.
In the image on this page, the sound level meter is positioned at a surrogate location to ascertain the noise from the forging plant, in the left hangar.
A second sound level meter recorded the sound level for 24 hours to ascertain the lowest background sound level during the night. This was performed to ascertain the impact of the noise at night time on the reisdential dwellings on the other side of the railway.
BS4142 noise assessment report
With both the specific sound level from the plant and the lowest background sound level, the true impact of the mechanical plant was reported.
Mitigation Measures
At the time of writing this page, the customer phoned to discuss the mitigation measures and the options feasible, as there are also health and safety and fire hazards to consider.
Originally, from an acoustic perspective, an acoustic canopy was proposed to cover the forging hammer, but now that business has increased, a second building is sought and could be located between the forging hammer hangar and the residential buidlings - the nearest sensitive receptors.
