Noise at work assessments

How we help you with noise at work and workplace services

We provide HSE noise risk assessments, to designing and installing the noise mitigation measures; so you only need to hire one company to resolve your noise problem.

Noise at work overview?

The level of noise to which an employee can be exposed is regulated by The control of noise regulations 2005 and is enforced since April 2006 in the UK by the Health and Saftey executive (HSE).

Is a noise at work risk assessment mandatory?

Yes. If there is any noise present in the workplace, a noise assessment is required, and at least every two years thereafter.

If any additional noise sources are added to the facility, a noise risk assessment is also required thereafter to ensure there is no risk to the employees.

Who needs to enforce the noise at work regulation in your workplace?

According to this regulation, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure that the employees are not exposed to excessive noise.

What are the workplace noise exposure limits?

For an HSE noise risk assessment, the noise exposure limits and action values, as stated in the control of noise at work regulations 2005, are:

  • lower exposure action values

    • daily or weekly personal noise exposure of 80dBA

    • a peak sound pressure level of 135dBA

  • upper exposure action values

    • daily or weekly personal noise exposure of 85dBA

    • a peak sound pressure level of 137dBA

  • Exposure limit values

    • daily or weekly personal noise exposure of 87dBA

    • a peak sound pressure level of 140dBA

For the purpose of compliance with the HSE noise at work Regulations, when the noise exposure varies remarkably from day to day, an employer may use weekly personal noise exposure values instead of daily personal noise exposure values.

What is involved in a noise at work risk assessment?

The main tasks that we perform when conducting a noise at work or occupational noise assessment are:

  • Identifying all noise sources, and the corresponding the noise levels

  • The duration of the noise sources, and the variation of the noise

  • The proximity of the employees to the noise sources

  • The noise levels to which the employees are exposed at their workstations

What detail is included in a noise at work noise risk assessment report?

In the noise risk assessment report or noise at work assessment report we include:

  • The name of the qualified person(s) conducting the noise risk assessment

  • The time and date of the noise assessment

  • A layout of your facility, the workstations and the location of the noise sources

  • The measured noise levels, their 1/3 octave measurements and locations

  • Details on where the noise is above prescribed limits

  • Calculations of daily and weekly noise exposures of all employees/work stations

  • Noise mitigation actions that should be considered and/or

  • measures to mitigate machine noise to remove all risk of noise risks

What if you have a noise problem that exceeds the noise at work regulation?

As acoustics, mechanical and vibration engineering consultants, we have the experience and expertise to mitigate noise along its transfer path and at the its source.

Therefore you do not need to involve a third party or additional companies to mitigate your noise; we can assist you in mitigating the noise.

How much does a noise at work assessment cost?

The cost of a noise at work assessment or an occupational noise assessment is dependent on a few factors, which we discuss within.

The cost is dependent on the size of your factory.
